Hello Community Reps!

Despite the ups and downs of the temperature, this is my absolute favorite time of the year to tackle invasives.

Weed of the Week:

You’re going to want to send this info onto your friends and neighbors right away! If you walk along any Resource Protection Area (RPA) in the Spring you may see a solid mat of green with little yellow flowers that are just starting to bloom. To the unaware Lesser Celandine can be quite attractive. but do not be tempted by its golden allure, it will take over every inch of real estate available, and fast!

Timing for treatment is important. Soon after these supervillains go to flower their leaves become waxy creating a barrier that protects them from herbicides. Best time for treatment is when about half of the plants are in bloom which is right about now. Single clumps can be dug out but be sure not to leave any bits behind.  Read more about what my daughter has renamed 'Loser Celandine’ on our website.

Pro Tip:

Take advantage of those April showers. Pulling invasives while the ground is wet limits soil disturbance and saves you a ton of work!  The new and revised saying should be: April showers and removing invasives, makes way for native plants in our wild spaces!

News this week:

A separate page for each town is being added to the FairfaxPrism.org website!  Check out the Clifton page as an example. Let us know if you would be willing to coordinate your town’s page. We will help connect you with Community Reps and other volunteers in your area!  We can even schedule a Happy Hour in your neck of the woods!

Success Story:

The Spring Extravaganza is in full swing and going brilliantly! Many successful events have already been held and many trees have already been rescued, but there is still a long way to go!  Check out the link below to find an event near you. If you are feeling really motivated, gather your neighbors and host an event in your neighborhood.

Spring Tree Rescue Extravaganza runs March 21- April 12th!

We are still looking for your feedback. Take this quick survey or drop us a note to let us know how we can best serve you.
